Summer Week of Justice 2021: Aug. 22-31 a week of Solidarity with the UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center

Are you interested in making a difference this summer? Join other students, recent grads, local social and economic justice activists for a week this summer from August 22- August 31.

The UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center is offering stipends to select students the week before the fall semester starts to engage in our communities; work directly with organizations doing social and economic justice work; and participate in sessions on the labor movement and workshops about organizing.

Labor Extension goes Virtual during COVID Epidemic

Since the COVID-19 epidemic hit, the UMass Labor Extension Program, like every other program that is not considered "essentail", has had to discontinue providing in-person educational events.

But that has not stopped us from pursuing our mission in other ways. We have held on-line webinars (such as the Frontline Workers Forum, above) and workshops, and will continue to do so, at least until it becomes safe to meet in person again.

We are always available to design and facilitate online workshops for your union or organization. We are also planning open enrollment sessions on various topics. These webinars will be announced on this page, so keep checking back for updates.

UMass Labor Extension Program leads SEIU 509 Chpater Presidents Retreat

UMass Labor Extension ran a two-day retreat for chapter presidents of SEIIU Local 509 on February 28-29. Leading the retreat were Anneta Argyres (UMass Boston), Clare Hammonds (UMass Amherst) and Elizabeth Pellerito (UMass Lowell).

There were about 15 participants, all chapter leaders from both the public and private sectors.

The focus of the 2 day workshop was on developing a plan for increasing activism within each chapter, which included developing a vision, mapping each chapter, and reframing member issues as public good demands.

Mass. Labor Educators Meet to share ideas and currculum on labor and environmental justice

The LEP coordinated a meeting of 10+ labor educators to share information about our work to get ideas for future work. Participants came from Pride at Work, AFT, MTA, and MassCOSH. There were three speakers, from SEIU, the Sierra Club and UMass Boston LEP/MTA.

Visions of Labor: Film and Worker Voices

The UMass (Amherst) Labor Center invites you to join us November 8-10 for an exciting event, Visions of Labor: Film and Worker Voices. Together, as workers and social justice activists, we will watch and discuss labor films, along with worker-created videos, as we explore the power of worker stories and how these stories can be used to inspire reflection and spur creative action. You’ll also have the opportunity to get a sneak preview of a major labor film in-progress, and hear from the film’s award-winning director. The films and videos shown will reflect the diversity of the labor movement and working people, and our discussions together will highlight the many ways in which worker voices can be effectively heard.

UMass Dartmouth hosts event celebrating history of Pride at Work in Provincetown Aug 24

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic Stonewall Rebellion.

In commemoration of that historic occasion, the UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center, in collaboration with Eastern Mass Pride at Work, held an event at the Provincetown Public Library on the afternoon of Saturday, August 24. The Director of the Provincetown library provided an introduction and we thank them hosting the Labor Education Center for our first event at the library.

James Green Memorial Lecture and the People's History Walking Tour -- October 26

UMass Dartmouth Dubin Labor Education Center to hold annual awards banquet on October 17

Save the Date! Please join us for the UMass Dartmouth Arnold M. Dubin Labor Educaiton Center's 44th Anniversary Banquet!

This year we will present the Arnold M. Dubin award to National President of UE, Peter Knowlton. The Annual Award Banquet is a unique opportunity that brings together labor and community leaders who have fought for justice in the workplace and beyond. Approximately 200 union and community activists and leaders attend each year to celebrate and forge our bonds for the work ahead

This gala event will take place at the Venus de Milo, 75 Grand Armuy of the Republic Highway, Swansea. It will start with a reception at 6:00, followed by dinner at 6:30.

UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center to sponsor a series of cultural and educational events

The Arnold Dubin Labor Education Center at UMass Dartmouth is kicking off the fall season with a series of educational and cultural events, starting with "The Strike of 28" a One Act Play, on Saturday, September 14; and culminating with its Annual Awards Banquet on October 17.

UMass Lowell Labor Education Program celebrates 25 year anniversary

On May 30, the UMass Lowell Labor Education Program celebrated its 25 year history with a gala event at UTEC in Lowell. Hundreds of people showed up to mark the quarter century of the program's existence; to honor the program's founding director, Charley Richardson; and to celebrate current director Susan WInning on the eve of her retirement.

A star-studded cast of labor and local political leaders gave speeches, a video tribute to Charley was shown, a live band provided music, and guests enjoyed food, drink and good company.

Women’s Fund Grant funds train-the-trainers on workers rights for immigrant women

Springing from this focus is an exciting new venture in which the Labor Education Center will collaborate with the Community Economic Development Center of New Bedford under the terms of a grant from the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts.
